Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

Find out more about staying healthy while travelling.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Encourage your child to jump online and complete the 5-minute personality and subject quizzes to be matched to a range of career options that suit their passions and strengths.

If they take both quizzes, they’ll get more refined suggestions. They can even create free online pinboards to shortlist the courses and jobs that interest them.

When your child creates an account, they can save their searches and build a real understanding of the opportunities and pathways open to them.

What can your child learn about their career options?

Your child can explore the weekly salary of the career options they’re interested in. They’ll also find the employment and growth rates of those careers and the number of workers currently in those fields in Australia.

Each career option shows them the education they need as well as other related careers. They can follow links to other sites to find out more about a course to help them find the best provider for them.

Launch into the future today

Use this tool to chat with your child about their post-school options in a meaningful way.

Inspire your child to find their career match today at LifeLauncher.nsw.gov.au.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

We spoke with a group of Kindergarten students to find out what they had to say about going against the herd. They had some wise words for us on how we can care, respect and support each other in our schools.

Let’s start the year off right and prevent student bullying happening in our playgrounds, classrooms and online. If a group of 5-year-olds know the difference between right and wrong, shouldn’t everyone?

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Charles Sturt University has just launched a new online resource site for HSC students, with online links and study resources for all major HSC subjects and courses (please see links below). This site replaces the old CSU HSC Online site, and will be annually updated by the university for HSC students, and also updated for the new Stage 6 courses at the end of next year. This site is now current for 2017 HSC students and 2018 HSC students (as well as Year 11 students 2017).

The new site is titled: CSU Guide for HSC Students

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data - School students with Disability

Background to the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

____________________________________________________________________________________

All Education Ministers from Commonwealth, state and territory governments have endorsed the implementation of a nationally consistent collection of data on school students with disability in all Australian schools (government, independent and Catholic).

The nationally consistent approach to data collection provides all Australian schools, education authorities and the community with a clear picture of the number of students receiving adjustments because of disability in schools, and the adjustments they are provided to enable them to participate in education on the same basis as other students.

Authority for the collection of information for the purposes of the NCCD

__________________________________________________________________________

The Australian Education Regulation 2013 (the Regulation) (https://www.legislation.gov.au/Details/F2016C00958 ) requires the operators of all government and non-government schools that receive Australian Government funding (approved authorities) to provide information to the Australian Government Department of Education and Training (the Department) for the purposes of the NCCD.

The information that approved authorities must give to the Department is set out at section 58A of the Regulation. This includes, in relation to each student with a disability at a school operated by the approved authority:

¿ the student's level of education (i.e. primary or secondary)

¿ the student's category of disability (i.e. physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional)

¿ the student's level of adjustment (i.e. support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive adjustment).

Other details about the information to be collected and the format in which the information is to be provided to the Department, are contained in guidelines approved by the Education Council (the committee of the Council of Australian Governments comprising the Commonwealth and state and territory Ministers responsible for 2

education). The NCCD guidelines are available on the Department's website at www.education.gov.au/nationally-consistent-collection-data-students-disability-guidelines.

The information will not explicitly identify individual students (subsection 58A(3) of the Regulation); no information that could reasonably enable the Department to identify individual students will be provided by approved authorities to the department1.

Collection, use and disclosure of NCCD information

The information collected by schools for the purposes of the 2017 NCCD will ultimately be provided to the Department. In some cases, this will involve the school passing the information directly to the Department, and in other cases the school will provide the information to its state or territory government agency (or other relevant body) in the first instance, depending on the school's particular arrangements. In such circumstances, that state or territory government agency, or other relevant body, will then provide the information to the Department.

The Department, on behalf of the Joint Working Group2, will use NCCD information for the purposes of preparing reports for and briefing the Australian Education Senior Officials Committee3 and the Education Council in relation to the NCCD. When providing these reports or briefing material, the Department will ensure that the NCCD information remains de-identified.

In December 2016, the Education Council released the report Improving educational outcomes: Emergent data on students with disability in Australian schools (www.educationcouncil.edu.au/EC-Reports-and-Publications.aspx). The Report provides high-level data from the 2015 NCCD and was the first public release of the NCCD data. 3

NCCD information may also be used for policy development undertaken by the Department, including informing funding considerations relating to students with disability, and other policy development as agreed by the Education Council.

In 2020, students are required to achieve a minimum standard of literacy and numeracy to receive their HSC.

Achieving the standard shows you, your parents and any future education and training providers and employers that you can do things like:

- follow instructions in equipment manuals

- write a job application

- calculate the quantity of materials to build a fence and prepare an invoice

Your child will show that they have met the standard by passing new online reading, writing and numeracy tests. They will take the online tests at school. Your child can take the tests up to twice a year.

Contact our school principal for more detailed information about the minimum standard, or visit the NESA website: NESA - Education Standards

Keeping Parents Informed

We continue to work with parents on the education of their children and enjoy the strong relationship we have. To continue building our work together, we have introduced two new initiatives to help keep parents informed about their child's progress:

Student and Parent Portal

Students and parents will be able to sign in to gain access to communication from teachers (including homework and assessments), school calendar, permission notes and information about excursions, as well as being able to book interviews for the Parent Teacher evening. Year 7 parents have seen this during the recent tour. Students were given notes and instructions regarding logging into the system.

Parents will be able to find out more information after the NAPLAN session on Wednesday March 15, 6:00 to 6:30pm in room 7.

As we progress this initiative, we are confident that the parent portal will become more and more significant in your day to day management of your child's enrolment at our school.

To access the portal, click here - Student Parent Portal

Progress Reports

Teachers have been assessing their student's learning attributes and this progress report for Year 7 to 11 will be sent to parents before the Parent Teacher interviews. Year 12 will receive their Semester report at the beginning of Term 2.

Local science winners could be on the path to world-saving discovery

Aspiring local science wizs have been told they could be the key to solving some of the world's future problems.

Thirty-one Riverina Year 11 students were yesterday awarded Victor Chang School Science Awards for their excellent achievement and passion for science.

Local science wiz Jacky Zhao of Junee High School was presented with his award by Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute research scientist Dr Christopher Stanley at a Riverina presentation ceremony hosted by Junee High School.

Dr Stanley shared his journey in science from an inquisitive youngster tinkering with a chemistry set to his current role making discoveries "that nobody else in the world knows about yet".

He urged students to follow their passions and dreams of pursuing a career in science.

Dr Stanley revealed that he had discovered chemicals that impact on blood pressure in certain people.

"The best part of science is that it allows you to contribute newly discovered knowledge to the world," Dr Stanley said."It can make a difference in people's lives."

Executive Director Public School NSW Graham Kahabka congratulated the Victor Chang School Science Award recipients and urging them to continue to apply themselves to sustain their achievements so far.

"Science is the thing that will help us in the future," Mr Kahabka said.

"I'm sure some out of this group here will be people that will be solving our problems."

After hearing each of the award winners' citations read by Cootamundra network director Jenene McGrath, in his closing remarks Deniliquin network director Troy Mott concluded that each of the students had not only excelled in science but were all-round achievers and leaders.

HSC Stress Less App

The HSC Stress Less App seeks to assist HSC students to manage their stress and difficult emotions throughout this high pressure year via the use of Mindfulness Meditation. Mindfulness Meditation is the art of "intentional attention". That is, simply being able to step back and observe, in a non-judgemental manner, our inner sensations and experiences. Mindfulness is used widely in the treatment of clinical issues such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. It is not religiously based and required no previous training.

Tell Them From Me - School Survery

We are delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve students learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year.

More information about the survey is available at:

http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school.

we want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 22 August and 21 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 9 August 2016. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from the website above.

National Data Collection

What is the National Data Collection?

The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (the national data collection) is an annual collection that counts the number of school students with disability and the level of reasonable educational adjustment they are provided with.

The national data collection counts students who have been identified by a school team as receiving an adjustment to address a disability under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (the DDA).

What is the benefit for my child?

The aim of the national data collection is to collect quality information about school students with disability in Australia.

This information will help teachers, principals, education authorities and families to better support students with disability to take part in school on the same basis as students without disability.

The national data collection is an opportunity for schools to review their learning and support systems and processes to continually improve education outcomes for their students with disability.

Who will be included in the National Data Collection?

The definition of disability for the national data collection is based on the broad definition under the DDA. For the purposes of the national data collection, students with learning difficulties such as dyslexia or sudatory processing disorder as well as chronic health conditions like epilepsy, diabetes or asthma, that require active monitoring by the school, may be included.

What information will be collected?

Every year your child's school will collect the following information for each student with a disability:

the student's level of education (i.e. primary or secondary)

the student's level of adjustment

the student's broad type of disability

The information collected by schools will be provided to all governments to inform policy and programming improvement for students with disability.

How will my child's privacy be protected?

Protecting the privacy and confidentiality of all students and their families is essential. Personal details such as student names student names or other identifying information will not be provided to local or federal education authorities.

Further information about privacy is available from: www.education.gov.au/notices.

Further Information

Contact your child's school if you have further questions about the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability.

You can also visit:

https://www.education.gov.au/fact-sheets-and-resources-national-data-collection

If you have any concerns about your child being involved in this collection of data please contact the school office before 1 July 2016.

At a formal ceremony in front of peers, teachers, parents and special guests, Amelia Patterson and Jackson Price-Maxwell were presented the 2014 GEO Bressington Scholarships.

Both Jackson and Amelia were also recognised for their active roles as students during their six years at Junee High School.

Amelia was awarded Outstanding Student every year, an active member of the Student Representative Council for five years, a Peer Support leader, gold winner of the Compact Maths Challenge and in 2012 was selected as Director General for a Day.

Jackson also received recognition for his diligent and methodical work across all curriculum areas, his membership on the Student Representative Council and as an active supporter of community charity events and sporting activities.

The scholarships were presented to both graduates by Mr Chris Moor, the GEO Finance and Administration Manager.

The scholarships are awarded to both the male and female graduate students from Junee High School who gain the highest ATAR for their year and go on to further study.

The Bressington Scholarships resulted from a bequest of the late Bill Bressington in 1989. Then, after the final Bressington Scholarship was awarded in 2010, GEO kindly offered to keep the generous scholarships alive for the students of Junee High School. Since the change the prize has been known as the GEO Bressington Scholarships.

There are some big staffing changes afoot for Term One.

Mr Brown was asked at the end of January to take on a Relieving Director role based in Queanbeyan for the first term. When asked he let staff know that he saw this as, "… a great opportunity to see what is being done in many other schools in NSW. There are some very exciting and challenging programs that the Department of Education is putting into place. It will be wonderful to see how schools implement these changes to provide the best possible learning outcomes for students. "

While Mr Brown is absent, Mr Vercoe will be Relieving Principal. Mr Turner will return to the role of Relieving Deputy and Mr Lyons will step up to his position, Head Teacher Science and PDHPE. We are really fortunate to have so many capable people ready to step up to these higher duties.

Meanwhile, the great news is that we have secured all our staffing for 2014. We have trained teachers for every subject and lots of enthusiasm amongst the staff to make 2014 an outstanding year for the school. We look forward to maintaining our close relationship with the Junee community and working even more closely with our Ngumba-Dal Learning Community partners.

In addition, the Archibull cow and calf will be on show. Both these statues have been artistically decorated by primary and secondary students enrolled in the Ngumba-Dal Learning Community of schools.

Each figurine represents different aspects of our farming heritage and are expected to delight children of all ages who visit the exhibition.

Farewell to our Class of 2013 Year 12

We congratulate and wish our Year 12s all the very best as they complete their last week at school; the culmination of thirteen years of schooling. They join over 70,000 students who will be attempting the HSC this year. The number of students completing the HSC has continued to grow in recent years as more and more young people have determined that they need the HSC to compete in an ever-challenging and demanding future world.

Thank you to our whole school community for the support, energy and determination that has been shown in supporting the school.

Most students have settled well into the new school year.

There have already been some wonderful ‘boastable' achievements this term in a range of activities.

Perhaps right at the top of the list was Ebony Becquet reaching the last five in the State Final of the Lions Youth of the Year Quest. Fantastic!

There has been some wonderful work done by a number of our students working with our Ngumba-Dal Learning Community partners, with a range of Ag projects on the hop.

Many, many students are working their way up the Honours ladder. Our Lions Club Honours Assembly takes place next term.

Year 7 and Year 11 Peer leaders had a brilliant time in Sydney.

Now, let's see what we can all do to make Term 2 even better.

Laptops arriving soon for 2013

Year 9 students of Junee High School are set to receive their laptops next week. In 2012 each student attended an induction session about their laptops and responsibilities. Further information and links to the 2013 Laptop Loan Charter are now available.

DIGITAL EDUCATION REVOLUTION – NSW (DER-NSW)

Since 2009 the DER-NSW program has successfully delivered over 250,000 laptops to year 9 students, installed wireless access points in over 21,000 learning spaces, provided professional learning experiences to teachers and leaders across the state, developed more than 250 online resources and supported schools with 560 school based Technology Support Officers. 2013 will see the final rollout of 63,500 laptops.

Under DER-NSW Junee High School received nearly 280 laptops, had wireless access installed in 27 rooms and a Technology Support Officer employed full time from 2009-2013.

The DER-NSW one to one laptop program has led to enhanced access to computers and the internet for students, teachers and students' families, plus the movement of teaching practice towards the skills of the 21st century, greater access for students to global information resources and tools and improved motivation and engagement of students. (Source: The 2010-2012 evaluation of DER-NSW by the University of Wollongong)

	New laptop arrangements from 2013

The Australian Government's DER National Partnership Funding finishes at the end of 2013. Students who have already received laptops or alternate technology under this program (i.e. years 10, 11 and 12 2013) will continue to use them under the terms of the Laptop User Charter while remaining at a government school, with transfer of ownership on final completion of year 12. In 2013 there will be a roll out of laptops to schools, similar to previous years. This is to be based on Year 9 student numbers.

In 2013 laptops allocated to schools become school property. Thus any allocations to students are to be done as loans to students. Parents/Caregivers will be required to sign a Laptop Loan Charter. Since the 2013 laptops will not be considered part of the state wide pool, there will be no transfers of laptops between schools unless an arrangement is made between principals. This includes when a student moves to a new school.

To get a laptop in 2013

A three step process has been developed at Junee High School to facilitate the smooth roll out of laptops into the hands of each Year 9 Class of 2013 student.

Parents/Caregivers need to download and read the 2013 Laptop Loan Charter

2013 Laptop Loan Charter

Then, each student and their Parent/Caregiver MUST sign the front page of the 2013 Laptop Loan Charter and give it to the school office by 9.00 a.m. on 11 February 2013

Students who have handed in their signed 2013 Laptop Loan Charter to the school can then receive their laptop by the following Friday.

Junee High School continues to plan how to best integrate Information and Communications Technology (ICT) into teaching and learning and to take advantage of emerging technologies and new ICT devices in ways that will best meet the learning needs of our students.

Laptops for Year 9 Class of 2013

Laptops for the Year 9 Class of 2013 at Junee High School are expected to arrive at the school as early as 19 February. The news comes from the School Allocation Report provided by the Digital Education Revolution - NSW (DER) program.

Previous laptops delivered to students since 2009 have been used across all areas of curriculum, including English, Mathematics, History, Technological and Applied Studies.

	The Lenovo x131e Laptop features:

 the Intel® Celeron® 877 processor,

 a Solid State Drive

stronger hinges – designed to last 50,000 open and close cycles

60% reduced gap on keyboard preventing objects from getting wedged under the keys

a dustless Fan – filters dust from entering the fan assembly to extend the life of the fan

stainless steel hinge brackets – allow an open system to absorb 150% more force to the top cover before failure

For the first time during the life of the DER program, this year's laptops will be owned by the school, however, the rollout of devices will be consistent with previous years where students will receive and be responsible for their laptop to take home.

In previous years, the laptops were purchased by the NSW Department of Education and Communities (DEC) and could be shared across all schools. With the change of ownership, the devices will now remain at Junee High School should students move away from the school but will ensure equal access for every student attending combined Year 9 and Year 10 classes this year.

As the Year 8 Class of 2012, this year's Year 9 attended class sessions where they were introduced to the responsibilities of having laptops and the laptop features. Further information about picking up their laptops will be provided in early February as the delivery date gets closer.

In Australia, much time, effort and investment has gone into ensuring that the mining boom is sustainable, but both our country and other nations in the region need to focus on food production to meet the demands of an ever increasing population.

The inaugural AgVision Expo was hosted by Junee High School on Wednesday August 8, 2012. More than 320 Year 9 and 10 students from around the Riverina region and as far afield as Sydney took part in the day.

The expo provided students with hands on experience of how food arrives on our dining table and to the real possibilities of a future career in a broad range of agricultural industries.

All teaching staff meet the professional requirements for teaching in NSW public schools.

Significant programs and initiatives

The school undertook an external review of Teaching and Learning in term 1. The school developed a plan to implement the recommendations for 2009 and beyond.

Student achievement in 2009

The school has improved on 2008 results. This improvement will continue as the structures we implemented flow through to further improvements in results. Year 7 students entered the school with below both regional and state averages in NAPLAN. The School Certificate and Higher School certificate results are below state average. The students do not perform as would be predicted from previous tests. Yet when they leave school they go to employment or further education in fields of their choice.
